I recently had to login in to update to a new 2FA app and oh my was it a wasteland. No one I had followed was still on it. And I mean that after scrolling for 5 minutes. It was just terrible.

Holy alts!
As a hiring manager I look for a few things:
Skills are waaaaay down on the list. I can take avg technical proficiency and make you a lot more successful than someone with a lot of proficiency but lacks other emotional skills.
noc.social is a small but quick server. Don’t use Android so I can’t speak to that.
And I will say that I’ve got much better engagement on Mastodon than I ever did Twitter. The people overall are kinder and more thoughtful. It’s more likely that the disrupters just aren’t there yet. Almost everyone I had followed on Twitter is on Mastodon though. May not be the same for everyone.
Oh interesting.
That’s a good summary. Google Gemini is no better. Type in a question and it starts off great but then devolves into other brands, other steps to do something that isn’t related to the thing you asked. It’s just terrible and someone will sue them over it next year. Just wait.
This exactly. Don’t know how else to describe it. Most people don’t realize it’s even possible.
Whistling. Took decades and I can do it two different ways (lips and teeth). I now do it subconsciously when listening to music where I’ll typically add other melodies or harmonies. I can bird call pretty much flawlessly. Loudest I get is over 100dB. Average is low 90s. Not much use but it’s fun.
Their point is that China doesn’t innovate, they imitate. And when they try to innovate they fake it (see Chinese robots that are actually humans in costumes). Authoritarianism doesn’t generally lend to productive creativity no matter how many people they have to pool from.
Yep, the rich are rich because they borrow other peoples money. 0% free interest lines are about the best discount you can get on anything. I get to make the interest while you hold the loan? Sign me up! Siri, remind me in 11 months to pay off the X loan.
Ugh, my elderly neighbor was going on about how Harris was going to take away this and that, most of which I’d never heard her say or even read about her plans doing, and I said, “where did you hear that? It was Fox News wasn’t it?” He replied with, “well, what news do you watch?” I said, “it sure isn’t Fox where they lie constantly. Harris hasn’t said any of that crap … you need to get your news from multiple sources.”
We’d be a heck of a lot better off if the news agencies were held accountable for telling lies and making up stories. Yeah, I know it’s a fine line but it’s one I’m willing to walk at this point.
Classic movies, usually from TCM. I love classics but they’re often fantastic to fall asleep to with their slower stories and quieter dialog.
It’s so bad that I 1) refuse to pay for premium so I don’t enable the behavior and 2) ended up sideloading an alt YouTube app on iOS that just doesn’t display the ads. YouTube hasn’t been able to block that one yet as it spoofs as the original YouTube app. Totally unsanctioned and a pain in the ass to keep the certificate alive but worth it. YouTube is actually enjoyable again. All that because the ads interruptions were constant. If it was every 15 min or so I wouldn’t care, but every 5!? Get the hell out of here!
Agreed, we’re living in the a computer/phone is an appliance age. This is also why there is a movement that doesn’t like electric vehicles. They’re just too accessible and they don’t like that. Same mentality here. The only main difference is of course there is librehardware out there AND software. Just about the entirety of Linux ecosystem is this. If one wants to tinker and make them personal all one has to do is build a home lab. Plenty of maintenance on one of those and it’s probably not affecting one’s day to day life.
