I know I failed out of my first year of college simply because all through school I was told I was so smart. So I got to college and was bitch slapped by what actual work looked like. Luckily I turned it around. However I had someone who was sort of my counter part who was in the same advanced classes as me, same thing happened and he works at a gas station in the middle of nowhere now. You want to think your kids are special and want to encourage them, but no.

We need to teach that special is earned, not a given.

Good. Americana think they’re so much different from everyone else and we’re literally not. I hold a form belief that everyone just wants to go to work, get off work, they’d rather get a pizza for dinner but they’re going to try to eat something better, are looking forward to their next day off, and when it comes they’re going to go to their target equivalent for a boring errands run. I think about 90% of the people are in this category, just average working people, and that makes me feel a little more connected with them.

That America was the greatest country in the world. And truly, not trying to be political, but honestly the propaganda in Midwest America was real. I didn’t know anything about other countries - except for we were better. We figured it out, we built the best system ever and everyone else wanted to be like us.

Now those are the people I see overseas who are about to get punched in a pub.

Same. I forget what I was reading/watching, but it’s a shame that they build these gorgeous worlds just to put an assassin’s creed game into. Odyseey and Valhalla were both gorgeous, then they fill it with fetch quests and tedium. I don’t understand why they don’t just build worlds, and let smaller studios fill them out. They could do a base assassin’s creed, but think of how many other stories could have been told with the sheer size of Odyssey

I had done the same thing for about 60 hours, and when I finally thought I was done with the monotony I was transported to 2 new locations that required me to do around and do boring fetch quests. I just never went back to it, and that was… 2 years ago? Still installed, just don’t care.

Story was fine but there was so much boredom between actual story that what was the point.

Yeah I’ve learned that it’s usually someone just trying to do their best, so if you know who is pushing for the large thing, when you are describing what you want give them something they can focus on. Like for your slumber party adding in “<<Person>> if you can make that <<dish you really like>>, that would make it really special”, then they have an outlet to pour their effort, and you get something tasty!

I used to be like you, thinking there was nothing special about a birthday and not wanting a party. But, if you flip it around, the party isn’t really about you ironically. It’s about those you care about actually wanting to celebrate you, and that’s a pretty special thing in my book. Who cares how many, there are people who love you who want to make you feel special, and it makes them feel good throwing something, so just have a good time.

Now, if you don’t want a big thing, then just be honest with them. Something as simple as “I really do appreciate the thought, but honestly I would have just as much fun going to <<your favorite restaurant>> and sharing a glass of wine with you all.” Let them know how they can make it special for you, and then just have a good evening. Find something you enjoy like that that they’ll feel good treating you, and enjoy the people who love you :)

I feel like there is a lost art of DBAs, where in their mystical knowledge rests how to make perfect cheap and scalable databases, and business cast them away because “Why not pay Google twice that amount?”

It’s happened a few times in my career where people tell me I’ll be obsolete, but it’s always been some company hyping their new product and suits frothing at the prospect of not having to pay me anymore.

So far they’re like 0 for 8 or so.

Now I will say the goalposts move. What I’m doing now is for sure not what I was doing 10 years ago. I’m definitely heavier in devops and infra than where I was before (ironic because they said we’d never have to worry about that stuff again if we moved to the cloud). AI is still basically machine learning, just in a while loop, so I’ve spent time learning that. So, in a way, yes we’re obsolete in the sense that if I was the same engineer I was 10 years ago I wouldn’t be worth nearly this much, I had to grow and evolve with technology.
